Mental Health Support Ontario & Quebec

Central Canada’s mental health system faces numerous challenges, including geographic disparities, long wait times, and a shortage of mental health professionals. Societal stigma, cultural barriers, and rising stress levels further complicate the issue. Ontario and Quebec may face challenges, but they also offer lots of mental health resources and support services compared to most other provinces.

Mental Health Resources in Ontario

Specialized long-term treatment

Intensive mental health programs offer a structured, comprehensive approach to addressing mental health challenges. These programs can vary in intensity, ranging from outpatient to inpatient services, tailored to individual needs. Ontario has many intensive mental health programs, surpassing other provinces in providing specialized care for individuals with complex mental health challenges.

These are the leading mental health facilities in Ontario:

Ontario Shores

Ontario Shores Centre for Mental Health Sciences is a renowned facility offering inpatient and outpatient services catering to adolescents, adults, and seniors. They work with complex mental health problems, concurrent disorders, forensic assessments, eating disorders and much more.

Homewood Health

Homewood Health offers mental health and wellness services for individuals, families, and organizations. Their approach is comprehensive, covering prevention, support, and advanced treatment. They cater to diverse needs, from general mental health concerns to specialized care for high-stress careers, specific life stages, and trauma.

Waypoint

Waypoint Centre for Mental Health Care is a 315-bed academic and teaching hospital. They offer specialized care for mental health, addiction, and geriatric issues, serving a diverse population including youth, adults, seniors, and individuals involved in the criminal justice system.

Rapid access and crisis services

Rapid access and crisis services are designed to provide immediate support and intervention for individuals experiencing mental health crises. These services aim to reduce the severity of crises, prevent hospitalization, and connect individuals with ongoing care. Ontario offers a robust network of rapid access and crisis services, ensuring timely support for individuals experiencing mental health emergencies. There isn’t a centralized intake for Rapid Access in Ontario, so call Ontario 811 to find your nearest crisis service.

It's important to note that most crisis services are voluntary and will only respond to the request of the person experiencing a mental health crisis.

Indigenous mental health services

While urban Ontario mental health services often include Indigenous support workers and programs, the availability of Indigenous-led organizations remains limited in cities. First Nations, Métis, and Inuit seeking culturally safe mental health and addiction treatment can access residential and non-residential services at Indigenous treatment and healing centres oftentimes in remote parts of Ontario. Indigenous Canadians across Canada can also seek support from the Hope for Wellness Helpline, a 24/7 crisis line offering immediate help and culturally sensitive support.

Youth mental health services

Kinark and Ontario Shores are leading providers of specialized mental health care for complex youth in Ontario. Kinark works with youth and families, offering assessments and interventions. Their interdisciplinary team delivers services in various settings, including offices, homes, schools, and community locations, as well as intensive live-in programs. Ontario Shores has youth mental health services too. Their Prompt Care Clinic offers one-time assessments and consultations for youth aged 12 and older. They offer various stabilization programs in inpatient and outpatient settings.

Canada 211

Ontario doesn’t have a province-wide centralized mental health intake system. This can make it more difficult to find appropriate care and support. Ontario 211 is a convenient one-stop-shop for all mental health resources and support services in Ontario.

Mental Health Resources in Quebec

Quebec 211

Like Ontario, Quebec also lacks a centralized mental health intake system, making it more challenging to navigate the system. However, Quebec's 211 service offers a full list of every mental health resource in the province based on geographic location.
